Faculty Positions

ESL Instructor (05/10/12)

Washington College is seeking a qualified instructor for Fall 2012 to teach a two-credit semester-long language course in English for incoming international students and provide additional ESL support for these students outside of the classroom collaboratively with the College’s Writing Center. Successful candidates will have experience and proven ability in teaching English to speakers of other languages. B.A. required. M.A. in relevant field strongly preferred. This position comes with the possibility of teaching additional courses in Spanish, if experience is appropriate; thus the ability to teach introductory Spanish is very desirable.

Instructor for General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry (04/16/12)

Washington College, a private liberal arts and sciences College of 1450 undergraduates, located in Chestertown, MD, is seeking a leave replacement for the Fall 2012 and the Spring 2013. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a graduate degree in Chemistry or are ABD, who can teach general chemistry, and who have a solid background in organic chemistry. Applicants can apply for one or both semesters. Washington College offers a bachelor’s degree program in Chemistry and is accredited by the American Chemical Society.

For the Fall 2012 the position will be compensated as part time and consists in teaching one general chemistry lecture, a general chemistry laboratory, and three organic chemistry laboratories. The lecture session in general chemistry is held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30 to 10:20 AM and the lab session is held on Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. The three organic chemistry lab sessions are on Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, on Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, and on Wednesday from 1:30 to 4:30 PM. Travel for commuting will also be compensated for the Fall.

For the Spring 2013 the position will be compensated as full time and consists in teaching two organic chemistry lectures from 9:30 to 10:20 AM and from 10:30 to 11:20 AM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and three organic chemistry laboratories (times to be determined). Flexibility in the laboratory time is available.

Part-Time Lecturer of Spanish

Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology (12/21/11)

Behavioral Neuroscientist or Cognitive Psychologist

Washington College invites applications for a one-semester, full-time (3 course teaching equivalent) position with responsibilities beginning August 2012. PhD and ABD applicants are welcome. Staff Positions

Assistant Director, Office of Academic Skills (04/05/12)

10 Month Appointment

Responsibilities: The Assistant Director, Office of Academic Skills, provides academic support services, including tutorials and study skills assistance, to students and is responsible for the Peer Tutoring and Course Mentoring programs. The Assistant Director conducts one-to-one study skills sessions, workshops, and seminars for student groups who request them, such as Athletics, fraternities/sororities, and Resident Assistants. The Assistant Director collaborates with the Director, Office of Academic Skills, to develop, organize, and conduct the academic study skills course. The Assistant Director also works closely with other Academic Resource Offices including the Math and Writing Centers to coordinate tutorial services, peer tutor training, and the use of online scheduling software. The Assistant Director supervises the peer tutors and course mentors, manages student payroll, and maintains relevant records on student services and students’ progress.

Qualifications:
1. Education: Master’s degree (M.A.) in Psychology, Counseling, Student Development or related field.
2. Two to three years’ previous experience in academic or student support services.
3. Experience with peer tutoring and supplemental instruction initiatives.
4. Proficiency with educational technology, MS Office, and student database software programs.

Assistant Director of International Student Services (05/03/12)

Washington College seeks an enthusiastic, dynamic, and experienced individual to join the Office of International Programs as the Assistant Direct of International Student Services.

The Assistant Director of International Student Services (ADISS) has an essential role in supporting international students in their adjustment and adaptation to Washington College and life in the U.S.; as well as serving as a resource to campus departments on key issues faced by international students. The Assistant Director of International Student Services serves as the Designated School Official (F) and Responsible Officer (J) ensuring compliance with F1 and J1 visa regulations and procedures as they apply to international students and scholars. S/he collaborates with the Director of International Programs in the development and implementation of programs and services in support of exchange, visiting and matriculating international students.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline with at least three years experience in an international education office. Master’s degree preferred. Experience working with international students and visa/immigration regulations (SEVIS) required. Experience teaching English Language Learners, and knowledge of a foreign language are desirable. Experience living and/or working abroad preferred.

Director of Student Activities (05/14/12)

Responsibilities: Responsible for providing leadership and direction to student activities in order to ensure programs and services contribute to overall student satisfaction and to student learning. The director of student activities oversees the development and administration of a comprehensive activities program, including planning and implementation of student-oriented events, oversight of student organizations and clubs, and the efficient management of the newly renovated and expanded student center as well as other assigned programming spaces and event services. Directs activities of the department in accordance with departmental mission and planning, as well as the mission and planning of student affairs and the institution.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in higher education administration, student personnel or related field, and 1-3 years professional experience in student activities and/campus center management at a supervisory level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; exercise effective independent professional judgment; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, student organizations, faculty, staff, and external vendors; and relate successfully in one-on-one and group situations with persons representing diverse backgrounds and interests. Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices and theories of student learning and development; understanding of the cultural, social, recreational, and educational needs of the college community; ability to effectively manage student center facility; and proficiency in planning and assessment of program and activities, and principles of student employee training, supervision and evaluation.

GIS Technician (05/16/12)

This position is for a full-time entry-level GIS technician. The successful applicant will report to the Washington College GIS Program Coordinator and be located in the GIS office in Chestertown, Maryland. Primary duties will include: data entry and creation, provide supportive mapping and analysis upon request, and give technical support for computer hardware and software.

Nurse Practitioner (05/16/12)

Washington College seeks a family or adult nurse practitioner to fill a full-time academic year appointment in the Student Health Center.

The Nurse Practitioner provides primary care to all students and college staff on an as needed basis. The NP provides consultation and advice to students as a specialized practitioner in college health. As appropriate she/he consults with colleagues and collaborates with college physicians.

Qualifications: Master’s of Science Degree on Nursing with current Maryland RN license and national certification as An Adult or Family NP. Minimum two years experience as a nurse practitioner in a primary care setting. Board of Nursing and Pharmacy approved prescriptive authority in the state of Maryland with a valid DEA number. Must possess a demonstrated awareness of and appreciation for diversity and the needs of a diverse student body. Ability to provide a non-judgmental environment to facilitate communication with students regarding sensitive health issues is essential. Previous health teaching and counseling experience desired. Willingness to work cooperatively as part of a service based team to support the mission of Washington College. Current CPR certification.

Programmer/Analyst (6/6/11)

Responsibilities: This position works directly with the Assistant Director for Administrative Computing to maintain and support the administrative database system and other Administrative systems. They perform many simultaneous and interconnecting activities in support of information technologies. This includes organizing and providing lead support for a project team in the development, design, and maintenance of software for highly complex applications, and systems.

This position is also responsible for quality assurance relating to testing and/or monitoring of problems in systems or applications effecting function and performance and also to propose and implement solutions as appropriate.

In absence of the Assistant Director for Administrative Computing and the Systems Analyst, is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the administrative computing system and staff.

Qualification: Bachelor's degree or equivalent required

Technical Services Lead Technician (12/08/11)

Responsibilities:
This positions works directly with the Director of Client Support and Technical Services to provide IT support for the Washington College community. This position is directly responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all college owned computers. The Lead Technician is responsible for researching, evaluating, and conducting a cost analysis of tools that have the potential to benefit Washington College.

The position takes the lead on special projects and provides direction for work produced by fellow Technical Services Technicians. The Lead Technician assumes the role of project leader when the assistance of other technicians is required. This includes ensuring that the team successfully evaluates and implements the phases of the project. The position also delegates work duties to the Technical Services Technicians for everyday tasks.

In the absence of the Director of Client Support and Tech Services the Lead Technician is responsible for the overall operation of the repair shop.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in electronics and/or computer systems troubleshooting required.

Experience and Background:

  • At least 3 years experience in the IT field with computer repair
  • Possess or be able to obtain Apple, Lenovo and A+ Certifications
  • Experience in Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems
  • Experience with job related software, Microsoft Office Suite, Internet browsers, email clients, backup software, and imaging software

  • Experience in documentation and writing reports
