Department: C.V.Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience
The C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College seeks a coordinator of its George Washington Book Prize, one of the nation’s largest literary awards.
The George Washington Book Prize honors outstanding works that contribute to a greater public understanding of America’s founding era (circa 1760-1820). Conceived and administered at the Starr Center (in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and George Washington’s Mount Vernon), the $50,000 annual prize is awarded by a panel of nationally distinguished historians. In addition to intellectual rigor and originality, the quality of writing is a decisive factor; jurors look for books that are able to reach a wide public audience, and that contribute substantially to the ongoing national conversation on the legacy of America's revolution. Past winners include Ron Chernow, Stacy Schiff, Charles Rappleye, Marcus Rediker, and Annette Gordon-Reed. There are a number of special events associated with the Prize, including an annual black-tie gala at Mount Vernon.
The George Washington Book Prize Coordinator administers and organizes the annual awarding of the Prize, including the acquisition and shipment of books, the judging process, publicity, and special events on and off campus. The Coordinator works closely with the director and staff of the Starr Center, with the directors and staff of the Gilder-Lehrman Institute and Mount Vernon, with the Washington Prize jurors, and with staff of publishing houses submitting entrants for the award.
The Coordinator will also be expected to assist with other Starr Center events and programs throughout the year on an as-needed basis.
This is a full-time position with full benefits as an employee of Washington College. The job requires excellent administrative, organizational, and communications skills, and a willingness to take on tasks such as managing event guest lists and shipping packages to jurors, as well as keeping abreast of important new work in the field and handling press inquiries. Preference will be given to applicants with strong interest in and knowledge of American history, and/or experience in book publishing or other media. Depending on the qualifications and interests of the applicant, there may also be other opportunities to be involved in writing or developing programs about American culture and history.
